Local GOP Leader Says Neugebauer Will Face Zero Backlash For Outlandish Behavior

Check out this post: http://capitolannex.com/2010/03/23/local-gop-leader-says-neugebauer-will-face-zero-backlash-for-outlandish-behavior/) The Republican County Chairman in Congressman Randy Neugebauer’s home county says that the Congressman, who shouted out the phrase “baby killer” during debate on the healthcare reform bill Sunday night, will face zero backlash from constituents in his congressional district. Via the Dallas Morning News:

Lubbock County GOP chairman Chris Winn said Neugebauer has zero to fear in terms of voter backlash. Quite the contrary, he said, because the comments reflect the passions of his constituents. “Congressman Neugebauer represents his district as a Christian conservative and has done so with a great deal of respect,” Winn said. “He’s a gentleman, and his words should not be taken as hateful or cruel.”
Two aspects of this statement are contradictory. First, the claim that Neugebauer will face no backlash because his views reflect the “passion of his constituents.” It may reflect the passion of some of his constituents, but I would tend to think most of Neugebauer’s constituents would prefer a Congressman who doesn’t embarrass them on national television. Second, Winn claims Neugebauer is a “gentleman.” Last time I checked, “gentlemen” actually obeyed the rules of the deliberative bodies in which they sit and don’t shout out garbage in the middle of a debate. I can’t imagine that the folks in the 19th Congressional District—Republicans, Democrats, and independents, aren’t a little ashamed of the headlines their Congressman has been getting of late, to wit: WSJ’s Washington Wire:
Rep. Michael Capuano (D., Mass.), sitting about 100 feet from Neugebauer at a House hearing on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on Tuesday, used the opportunity to swipe at his GOP colleague. “My emotions might overcome me and I might be tempted to scream out that someone, or something or some group of people might be a ‘homeownership killer’ if they got rid of Fannie and Freddie,” Capuano said.
And now, via CBS, Stupak is calling on Neugebauer to apologize on the House floor:
“Randy did call and apologize. He said it wasn’t directed towards me personally. Well, if that’s the case then it must have been directed to the rest of the members of the House. I would hope Randy would just clear it up and take to the House of the Floor and say, ‘look I didn’t mean to offend anyone. If I did, I apologize,’ Stupak said on “Washington Unplugged,” CBSNews.com’s daily politics Web show.
Will the only yacht owner in the 19th Congressional District apologize? Doubtful. He’s already using Google Ads to ask people to help his campaign so he can continue to “fight for the unborn:”
Wonder if any of his constituents will tell him that the best way to fight for the unborn is to fight for healthcare for all?
